One of the most important parts of a green initiative is starting. It’s sometimes not an easy thing to get a company or person to look at their practices through green glasses. And often we forget that even small steps that we do help us move forward in our goals to make this planet more inhabitable.
I am reminded to celebrate successes after a recent stay at the new Starwood Brand, Aloft Hotels. As I checked in yesterday in Minneapolis, I asked to hear about their green efforts within the hotel and had the pleasure of meeting their director of Sales and Marketing. The first thing she told me is “we still have a long way to go but we are making strides every day.” That a great philosophy that everyone should embrace. Some of the items that impressed me included
- getting rid of shampoo bottles and soap bars
- looking at the back end operations for recycling and paper reduction
- choosing finishes (carpet, etc) that are renewable or use less waste
- eliminating styrofoam from their food areas
- finding a replacement for straws in a number of their drinks
Are they perfect, no. Especially when they talk about the reasons they don’t have recycling in the guest rooms. (They claim their is not enough room under the table for two bins, something I would challenge). But we should congratulate them on the work they are doing and encourage them to continue to do more.
